This product brief provides only a general view of the SMR range for standard housings and will facilitate the task of the designer in selecting the right housings for most common applications.
Many other types of bearing housings not listed here and variants of the listed housings adapted to customer demands can also be supplied.
For applications where standard housings are not suitable, SMR can supply special housings of grey cast iron, spheroidal graphite cast iron and cast steel — e.g. for conveyor equipment, rotary kilns, drums, tube mills, convertors, large electrical machines, paper making machines and rail vehicles. Standard SMR bearing housings incorporating the appropriate rolling bearings are economic replaceable bearing units and normally require little maintenance.
The bearing seating in the housings is machined to specific industrial tolerances so as to provide a perfect fit of the bearing outer ring. Generally the seating width is such that the bearing has axial freedom — slight axial positioning errors in mounting and thermal elongation of the shaft can therefore be accommodated within the housing.
To ensure reliable function and long operational life, the surface of supporting components should be machined to a surface roughness of Ra = 12.5 μm. For flatness, IT7 is recommended.
In most cases, axial location of bearings in the housings is achieved by inserting the locating rings as specified in the housing catalogs. Housings where locating rings are not used have the bearing seating machined to the appropriate width.
The suffix F indicates a locating bearing housing and suffix L a non-locating bearing housing.
It is necessary to lubricate rolling bearings to prevent metallic contact between rolling elements, raceways and cage. The choice of lubricant depends primarily on the temperature range and operating speeds.
